Sahara returns as SLS changes name

The long rumored change has happened. The SLS Hotel and Casino here in Las Vegas is taking back up its old name, the Sahara.

Almost an institution, the Sahara hotel is iconic of old Vegas, and hosted the Rat Pack, Jerry Lewis Telethon, and Beatles. Its Arabian theme was part of a gaudy, but nostalgic period where Sin City focused more on vice and gaming.

“Sahara is such a recognizable name,” Paul Hobson said, the SLS general manager.

700 guests were invited to the name unveiling, including celebrities and hotel employees. The event featured an elaborate drone light show and fireworks in the hotel’s outdoor pool area.

“The Sahara played an important role in the evolution of the destination,” Alex Meruelo, the new owner, told the crowd. “We are writing the next chapter in the city’s evolution, for the love of Vegas.”

Currently, the SLS has undergone considerable upgrades, adding new design features and restaurants. We like the new ceiling in the casino, and locals and tourists alike rave about the new Uno Mas, a Mexican cantina. Sadly, we understand that Cleo will be closing. But who knows? It may also get new life in a decade or two.
